Meet Stuart, our latest Pathfinder: The First Yolgnu Registered Nurse

Stuart Yiwarr McGrath, the first Yolŋu person to become a registered nurse, is a healthcare pioneer in the remote community of Ramingining, a small community in East Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. He expertly combines his Western medical training with his deep cultural knowledge, translating complex medical information into Yolŋu Matha to empower his patients.

Stuart didn’t have role models in healthcare growing up, so he became one. His journey highlights how STEM skills like science, communication and critical thinking can drive real change. He is passionate about improving health outcomes and inspiring more First Nations young people to join the health industry, increasing cultural safety for all.

His story is the latest in Future You, a series of profiles showcasing real people in science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM). Our free program aims to break down stereotypes to inspire children all over Australia to explore STEM and discover their strengths.
